The third is internal candidate already picked. The role must be posted externally (common at public companies), but the decision is made.
The fourth is agency trawling. A recruiter posts a generic version of a role from a real company to gather candidates they can then pitch. These are not ghost jobs in the strict sense but they waste the same amount of your time.
Most postings are real, active roles. The problem is that the four ghost categories are indistinguishable from the outside, so every application involves a degree of guesswork — which is what the signals below are for.
What Changed in 2024-2026
Three shifts made ghost jobs worse. First, LinkedIn's algorithm rewards companies that post frequently, creating an incentive to repost even when nothing is hiring. Second, the cost of posting has collapsed — there is no real penalty for leaving a stale listing up. Treat them as heuristics rather than measurements: any single signal can have an innocent explanation, and it is the combination that should make you cautious.
Signal 1 — Reposting Pattern
The strongest signal by far. If the same title from the same company appeared on LinkedIn within the prior 90 days, the listing is very likely not being actively filled. Twice in 90 days is close to conclusive.
What this tells you: open the company's career page in a new tab. Search the role title. If the same title keeps reappearing, you are looking at a ghost.
Signal 2 — Missing Apply Button
Listings that send you to a third-party tracker (Greenhouse, Workday, Lever) and fail halfway through the apply flow — form never loads, login screen loops, application never submits — are a strong indicator.
The ghost job rarely gets caught at the apply step because no one tests it. A broken apply flow is a strong signal the role is not being maintained.
Signal 3 — No Salary Range
In states that require salary disclosure (California, Colorado, New York, Washington), postings without a salary range are often out-of-compliance legacy listings — meaning nobody has touched them recently. This is a strong indicator in states where pay disclosure is mandatory.
Outside those states the signal is much weaker and not worth relying on.
Signal 4 — Generic Tech Stack or Vague Role Scope
If the listing cannot name specific technologies ('proficient in modern stacks'), a specific product or team ('part of our platform org'), or a specific problem being solved ('help us scale our systems'), it is often a generic template. A moderate indicator.
Real hiring managers pour context into a listing because that context filters candidates. Ghost jobs have no filter — whoever owned the listing is not actively reviewing.
Signal 5 — No Named Hiring Manager or Recruiter
Especially on LinkedIn: if the posting does not surface a connected recruiter, hiring manager photo, or 'meet the team' thread, A moderate indicator. Real requisitions at most mid-to-large companies ride with a named recruiter.
Signal 6 — Age of Listing (>30 Days)
LinkedIn listings older than 30 days is a moderate indicator, and past 60 days it becomes a strong one. Most hot requisitions fill or get paused within 4-6 weeks.
Signal 7 — Low-Signal 'About the Company' Section
Copy-pasted marketing language ('We are a fast-growing company passionate about innovation') without specific product names, customer segments, or funding details. A moderate indicator. Real hiring teams customize this section to attract candidates who care.
Signal 8 — Unrealistic Requirements
'10+ years experience in a framework that is 6 years old' or 'Expert in 8 different languages' type listings are a weaker but still useful indicator. These often come from templates that were never pruned — real hiring managers know these constraints shrink their pipeline.
Signal 9 — Contract-to-Hire Framing on Full-Time Roles
When a permanent role gets posted as 'contract with possibility of conversion,' it often means the budget ran out but the team is trying to backfill cheaply. A weaker indicator on its own, though more telling for senior roles.

Step 1 — Check the Reposting Record
Open LinkedIn Jobs. Search the exact job title + company. If the title appears with a 'posted N days ago' stamp AND a prior posting from the same company within 90 days, flag it. Then open the company's careers page (not the LinkedIn listing) and search the same title. If it has a different 'posted on' date than the LinkedIn version, that is another flag.
Step 2 — Test the Apply Flow
Click Apply. Fill in a throwaway email + name + one resume upload. If the flow breaks, errors, or lands on a broken redirect, that role is not being maintained. It is a 30-second test that rules out a meaningful share of postings.
Step 3 — Search for a Named Recruiter
On the LinkedIn posting, check the 'meet the hiring team' section. If empty, search LinkedIn for '[Company] recruiter [role type]' — if no human shows up associated with that role in the last 60 days, that is a signal.
Step 4 — Look for Signal Density in the JD
Real JDs have specifics: product names, team names, technologies by exact version, measurable outcomes ('reduce p99 latency for our payments API'). Generic JDs have platitudes. If the JD could be pasted into 50 other companies without changing a word, it probably was.

Is posting ghost jobs illegal?
Generally no. Some states require employers to include a pay scale in job postings — California and New York among them — but those rules govern what a posting must disclose, not whether the role is actively being filled. A stale listing is not, by itself, unlawful in most places, and enforcement of posting rules is limited. The cost falls on candidates.
